Rongai Route day by Day

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

  • Elevation: 1,950m to 2,600m
  • Hiking Time: Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 8km
  • Habitat: Rainforest
Begin your trek at Nalemoru Gate with a gradual climb through lush farmlands and forests. Keep an eye out for wildlife like colobus monkeys. The day ends at Simba Camp, located on the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

  • Elevation: 2,600m to 3,450m
  • Hiking Time:6–8 hours
  • Distance: 12km
  • Habitat: Moorland
The trail ascends steadily through open moorlands, offering breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the eastern icefields. Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you’ll enjoy a peaceful evening under the stars.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

  • Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: 9km
  • Habitat: Moorland
Continue your journey across rugged terrain and past volcanic features. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Kikelewa Camp, set in a sheltered valley with giant groundsels and lobelias.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (Acclimatization Day)

  • Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: 6km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
A shorter day designed for acclimatization, the trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp offers incredible views of Mawenzi Peak. Spend the afternoon exploring the area or resting to adjust to the higher altitude.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: 8km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a barren and wind-swept expanse. Arrive at Kibo Hut, the final base camp before the summit. Prepare for the midnight summit push with an early dinner and rest.

Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,720m
  • Hiking Time: 10–15 hours
  • Distance: 12km
  • Habitat: Arctic (summit), then Moorland (descent)
Begin your summit attempt at midnight, climbing through the Arctic zone to reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m) and continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,880m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: 20km
  • Habitat: Rainforest
A long descent through moorland and lush rainforest leads to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Enjoy your farewell to the mountain and your trekking team.
