Umbwe Route day by Day

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

  • Elevation: 1,600m to 2,850m
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Distance: 11km
  • Habitat: Rainforest
Your trek begins at Umbwe Gate with a steep climb through the lush rainforest. The trail is narrow and rugged, with stunning views of the surrounding forest canopy. Arrive at Umbwe Camp in a scenic clearing surrounded by towering trees.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Distance: 6km
  • Habitat: Moorland
The trail becomes steeper as you leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone, with its unique vegetation and open landscapes. The day ends at Barranco Camp, offering spectacular views of the Barranco Wall and the southern glaciers.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,950m to 3,995m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 5km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Start the day with an exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep rock face requiring some scrambling. After reaching the top, enjoy panoramic views before continuing to Karanga Camp, passing through valleys and ridges.

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: 4km
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail ascends steadily to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit. This section of the trail offers striking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Kilimanjaro Baranco Wall

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,068m
  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
  • Distance: 17km
  • Habitat: Arctic (summit), then Rainforest (descent)
The summit push begins around midnight. Climb through the Arctic zone to Stella Point (5,756m) and then to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and descend back to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3,068m to 1,640m
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Distance: 10km
  • Habitat: Rainforest
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your trekking team.
